In the present paper Irpex is maintained as a monotypic genus, while Steccherinum is accepted with 17 species. Of these S. ethiopicum, S. galeritum, S. gilvum, S. lanestre, and S. willisii are described as new species, S. hydneum is proposed as a new combination. A considerable proportion of the paper is devoted to all the species (and a few subspecific taxa) that have been wrongly described in or transferred to Irpex and Steccherinum. Some of the specific epithets are transferred to other genera, such as Beenakia (p. 555), Climacodon (p. 546), Dentipellis (p. 551, 558) and Hyphodontia (p. 567).
