Net zoals veel andere planten produceren en bewaren tomaten secundaire metabolieten in klierhaartjes. Klierhaartjes bevinden zich op het vegetatieve weefsel van planten en zijn van epidermale afkomst. Een groep van metabolieten geproduceerd door deze gespecialiseerde organen zijn vluchtige terpenen, die uitgestoten worden wanneer de plant aangevallen wordt door herbivoren. Deze vluchtige stoffen kunnen worden waargenomen door vijanden van de herbivoren (predatoren en parasieten). Zij voeden van, of leggen eieren in de herbivoren, wat voordeel oplevert voor de plant. Productie van terpenen is kostbaar en daarom strikt gereguleerd. Deze regulatie wordt bewerkstelligd door transcriptiefactoren, die de expressie van terpeen-synthases controleren. Elini Spyropoulou richtte zich op de identificatie van transcriptiefactoren die terpeen-biosynthese in klierhaartjes van tomaat reguleren. Ze identificeerde twee transcriptiefactoren die interacteren met de promoter van terpeen-synthases. Opvallend is dat deze twee transcriptie factoren een synergistisch effect hebben op de regulatie van een specifiek terpeen-synthase.
