Camiel van Winkel onderzocht de conceptuele wortels van de hedendaagse beeldende kunst. Hij stelt dat de kunst van vandaag als geheel in wezen ‘postconceptueel’ is. De productie en ontvangst van kunst worden bepaald door omstandigheden en factoren die conceptuele kunstenaars in de jaren 1965-1975 voor het eerst hebben aangekondigd: de culturele dominantie van informatie, de professionalisering van de kunstpraktijk en de toepassing van kwaliteitscriteria ontleend aan ontwerpdisciplines. Vanuit deze postconceptuele systematiek biedt het onderzoek van Van Winkel een nieuwe blik op het hedendaagse kunstenaarschap en de beeldende kunstpraktijk, met name wat betreft de relatie tussen conceptuele en visuele aspecten, de betekenis van theoretisch discours en de rol van instituties en bemiddelaars.
