Omdat planten blootgesteld kunnen worden aan aanvallen van schadelijke insecten, hebben ze geavanceerde verdedigingssystemen ontwikkeld. Een belangrijke verdedigingsstrategie is de afgifte van geurstoffen die natuurlijke vijanden van het schadelijke insect aantrekken. Dit is een voorbeeld van een indirect verdedigingssysteem Zogeheten groene geurstoffen of Green Leaf Volatiles (GLVs) vormen een groep van geproduceerde vluchtige stoffen die betrokken zijn bij de indirecte verdediging. Silke Allmann beschrijft de biosynthese van GLVs in wilde tabak (Nicotiana attenuata). Ook onderzocht ze de invloed van vraat van de Manduca sexta-rups en bekeek ze welke gevolgen door vraat geïnduceerde veranderingen in GLV-samenstelling hebben voor de herbivoor en een natuurlijke vijand. Allman laat zien dat speeksel van Manduca-rupsen een enzym bevat dat de samenstelling van de GLVs verandert. In veldexperimenten bleek dat een natuurlijke vijand van de rups, een wantssoort die zich voedt met Manduca-eitjes en jonge larven, de door de rups geïnduceerde veranderingen in het GLV-profiel van de plant gebruikt om zijn prooi te lokaliseren.
