Bij bloedvergiftiging (sepsis) kunnen nieren acuut falen. Waarschijnlijk omdat ze dan te weinig zuurstof krijgen. Tanja Johannes ging na of de nierfunctie behouden blijft als hypoxie (tekort aan zuurstof) en het haperen van de circulatie in de nieren worden voorkomen. In een model waarbij nierfalen in gang werd gezet, herstelde de nierfunctie zich weer. Hoewel de gemiddelde zuurstofvoorziening in het nierweefsel slechts weinig was gedaald, ontstonden tijdens het experiment plaatselijk gebieden met een tekort. Johannes toont aan dat er een verband is tussen het verminderde zuurstofgehalte in het weefsel en de nierfunctie. Meer onderzoek is nodig om het bewijs te leveren van een causale relatie.
