- De kunstwerken van Rafael en Michelangelo zijn na hun ontstaan in de vroege zestiende eeuw wereldberoemd geworden. De uitvoerige theologische verhandelingen van hun tijdgenoten zijn daarentegen in de vergetelheid geraakt. Toch vormt de katholieke theologie van de renaissance de sleutel tot een goed begrip van de pauselijke beeldende kunst.
